ATO lobs warning to multinationals on tax avoidance

The Tax Office has warned multinational companies they face stiff penalties if they try to avoid new laws against tax avoidance brought in by former treasurer Joe Hockey.

In its latest crackdown on tech companies such as Google and resources groups such as BHP Billiton that route sales through tax havens including Singapore, the ATO has warned it can impose penalties of up to 120 per cent of the tax avoided.
