As we know, out profession has become ‘borderless’ in recent years. Accordingly, there is a significant amount of work that the IPA does to advance the interest of our members and to achieve positive policy outcomes in a range of forums.

The Institute continues to focus on showcasing members on an international stage. In May and June, chief executive officer Andrew Conway was present at a number of international forums representing the Institute.

Andrew was invited to present the 2011-2012 scholarships to outstanding accountancy students from the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, one of the top-ranked, world-renowned research universities with a focus on applied economics and management services.

During his visit to China, Andrew also took the opportunity to meet with the Beijing Institute of Certified Public Accountants (BJICPA) to discuss how both bodies could strategically work together to develop small to medium accounting firms and benefit from each other’s knowledge.

The Institute’s international ties were further strengthened with a visit to the Accounting Society of China (ASC) where Andrew met with ASC representative s and Mr Liu, the Secretary General and Deputy Director General of the Accounting Department at the Ministry of Finance in China. Andrew was able to provide ASC representatives with an insight into the accounting landscape in Australia and the Institute’s involvement in policy development.

The Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA) also held a number of events which were hosted by CAPA President, Keith Wedlock, and attended by a number of regional member bodies, technical advisers and the IPA’s representatives.

Andrew also participated in the discussion of ‘Trade in Accounting Service and International Capital Flows – New Opportunities in the Development and Cooperation of the Internationalisation of the Accountancy Profession’ at the first China (Beijing) International Fair on Trade in Services Conference. The conference was a great opportunity for the Institute with over 600 representatives in attendance from government, companies, tertiary colleges, accounting firms and CAPA members.

Strengthening our small business credentials

Andrew was one of several presenters at a forum for public authorities that was held as part of the International Council for Small Business World Conference. Andrew touched on issues relevant to regulation and looked at the co-regulatory role played by the accounting profession. It was yet another example of the Institute stamping its credentials on the small business landscape.
