From micro to small to medium-sized to big, businesses in Australia account for more than half of industry employment. Collectively, they contributed over one-third of industry value added in 2009/10. The vast majority of businesses – around 96 per cent – are micro or small entities, with fewer than 20 employees.
Surveys of business conditions and attitudes are undertaken by private companies on a monthly and quarterly basis, providing valuable information on business trends, expectations and overall conditions. They also serve as a barometer of confidence through the responses of business owners and the wider public.
