From the CEO: An eye on the big picture

The nation’s eyes were on the proceedings of the Gillard Government’s recent Tax Forum, with the hope of genuine discussion and reform. The Institute was privileged to have been invited to the event, and attended on a small-business platform, stressing the need for preferential income tax treatment to offset the disproportionate compliance costs that the SME sector bears.

From the CEO: Enhancing partnerships and relationships

Unfortunately, the decision not to include GST issues in the line-up meant that real reform could not be given the air time it genuinely deserved. However, comfort was taken in the fact that the Institute was picked exclusively to present accountants’ views in the business portion of the forum.

Introducing the Financial Services Package

The past few months saw the launch of our new Financial Services Package. The service will form part of My Public Accountant and offers a range of options enabling members to take advantage of the new Future of Financial Advice reforms and grow their business. This invaluable resource is being offered in partnership with Australia’s two largest wealth managers, MLC and AXA. It will revolutionise practice and client support and we will have more to say in coming months about this exciting initiative.

Pre-budget submission

The Institute has already begun its annual lobbying for the accounting profession with the preparation of the pre-budget submission to the Government. Focusing this year on the big picture issues facing accountants, the submission will target areas of greatest importance to members. Recognition of the term accountant takes a central role as we fight for the right of consumers to access quality accountants, and our members to be recognised as such. Small business will again be a major focus in our submission as we continue to stand up for the sector and the unfair burden placed on it by risk and regulation.
